Terry
Eiler, professor of visual communication, was photographing evidence of
air pollution and land erosion in the Four Corners area of Utah in 1972
when Mother Nature whipped up an amazing visual: a heavy dust storm that
sent his subjects in a migrant worker camp fleeing for cover.
The resulting image, "Taking Shelter During a Dust Storm," was one of many photographs commissioned by the early 1970's to document environmental problems across the country. The National Archives and Records Administration recently selected Eiler's picture and 156 others from its massive collection for publication in Picturing the Century: One Hundred Years of Photography from the National Archives. Eiler, who also has worked for National Geographic, used his usual photography tools to capture the image: a Nikon camera with a 180 millimeter lens and archival color transparency film, which was required for the assignment. |
